The Philosophy of the Doronbo Gang -- Lives Well Lived Despite Failures

A woman in red and black costume with a horned hat, holding a cigarette, stands before a burning tower. Dramatic night scene.

The Doronbo Gang are the main antagonist group in the classic Japanese Anime, "Yatterman". They consist of three members: The villainess and leader, Doronjo, and her two henchmen, Tonzura and Boyaki.

They are the team sent by a mysterious alien mastermind to steal mysterious artifacts known as the Skull Stones. They were promised a hefty sum for stealing them all, alongside with the fulfillment of their ultimate wishes.

Despite succeeding in attaining all the Skull Stones, they failed and suffered horribly along the way, constantly losing to the heroic duo, the Yettermen.

Yet, despite their embarrassing defeats at the hands of the heroic duo, the Doronbos were known for their happiness. Most of their theme songs are remarkable for their positivity, as well as their happy attitude.

After each defeat at the hands of the heroes, the Doronbos would escape with their team bicycle, and get punished by the shadowy mastermind for their horrible incompetence.

Yet, one would think, why are they so happy? If they get defeated all the time, why are they still happy? Most people, in their stead, would give up a long time ago, and even succumb to depression. But not the Doronbos!

Here are some essential traits to know about them:

  1. They are never lonely. They are always seen together with each other, and are known for their unique, dynamic culture.

  1. They are extremely determined in doing what they like best: Steal the Skull Stones and get their ultimate wish in return (at least, that's what they were promised...)

  1. The Doronbos LOVE their jobs. Most people may hate their jobs and may be in it only for the money, not for the passion.

In conclusion, the Doronbos lived what Socrates would call, a "Life well worth living". After all, they get the privilege of doing what they like best. It is something I wish each and every one of you would get to do!

Sometimes, what matters is not the failure, but getting to do in life what YOU want to do, wholeheartedly.

And that is why the Doronbos are happy despite being a bunch of incompetent henchmen. Although they succeeded in attaining all the Skull Stones for their shadowy leader, the leader scammed them and ran away with the stones, leaving the gang to retire.

As much as they hated being scammed, what they seemed to have missed the most are the happy memories they shared with each other.

And sometimes in life, these happy experiences are all what truly matters, for a life truly well lived.

Perhaps, sometimes, in our accomplishment-driven world, we should also focus on whether or not we are happy, doing what we're doing in life.
